Initial Firearms Training in Hayward

Firearms are used by many security professionals to ensure the safety of themselves and others. However, when an inexperienced person tries to use a firearm, the results are anything but safe. This is why it’s so crucial to receive proper firearm training. Our intensive and in-depth training is intended for security professionals who want to learn about the use of firearms. Our courses are conducted in a friendly, relaxed environment that emphasizes safety and mastery of weapons systems for all experience levels. No matter what your level of expertise, we have a class that can teach you something new. We encourage all students, from beginners to the more advanced, to challenge themselves by learning and reinforcing proper techniques in order to take their skills to the next level.

Initial Firearms is a 2-day 14 hour course which covers the Dept. of Consumer Affairs guidelines for carrying and using a firearm. At the end of the course, you will be fully prepared to handle your firearm properly and effectively at a moment’s notice.

1st day is classroom

  • Firearms safety preview
  • Pistol and revolver parts and function overview
  • Ammunition types and function
  • Scenarios (videos and discussion)
  • Procedures following a shooting (officer’s rights and responsibilities)

2nd day is at the range.

  • Additional fee’s required Live scan $115
  • State BSIS Firearms Application Fee’s $100
  • Firearms Assessment $60
  • Range Fee’s, Ammo etc. from $60-100 depending on Caliber’s & the range

It’s important all student must call into the office to schedule an appointment for any class or range time.  We are requiring a deposit of $60 for Initial Firearms to have a head count.

During the range training (Day 2), students will practice in safely handling and firing duty weapons, and then participate in the BSIS Approved Range Qualification Course of Fire.

The cost of the class includes the opportunity to qualify at the range with (1) ONE firearm is $140. For an additional fee of $20 per caliber, students can also qualify with additional calibers. Students may bring their own firearm(s) to the range (Day 2). Student's that don't own a firearm have the opportunity to qualify with ONE of Garcia’s firearms at no additional fee (only the following calibers are available for use: 9 mm, .40, .45, .38, or .357). Students are responsible for purchasing their own ammunition (50-100 rounds) each caliber for the Range Training & Qualification Day. If a student pays for more than one caliber, he/she will need to provide 50-100 additional rounds for each caliber. Ammunition can be purchased at the Milpitas County or Santa Cruz County.  Hearing and eye protection can be borrowed from Garcia’s Security Training at no additional cost.

In accordance with the standards established by the BSIS, students must qualify with a minimum score of 80 percent on a course of fire prescribed by the Bureau and pass with a minimum score of 85 percent or more on the Bureau-approved written examination. Passing a written examination is only required at the time of the initial application and the renewal of the firearm permit.   • You must bring proof of U.S. citizenship or legal residency in the United States in order to shoot. Original documents ONLY.  Photocopies are not accepted.  The ONLY documents that are accepted by BSIS are:
    • Birth Certificate (hospital birth certs are not accepted. Must have official seal & document number)
    • U.S. Passport Book or Passport cards
    • DD-214
    • Valid Military ID
    • Green Card
    • INS paperwork.
  • Course fees do not include range time; ammunition; BSIS fees; or Live Scan.


Step 1 - Basic Firearms  
Before you buy a gun, you’ll want to take this class. Why own a firearm and what is the best choice of a firearm for your needs? Learn the fundamentals of a firearm – types and how they function. We will be handling a variety of firearms, dry firing (no ammo) and practicing safe handling procedures. BONUS: Our instructor will meet you at a local gun shop to help with final purchase.    Minimum of 4 hours   $200 plus Range fee and ammo

Beginner Shooting
Learn how to shoot your own gun through a series of stance, grip and aim drills. We’ll unlock secrets of experienced shooters and discuss justification of use of your firearm. Beyond shooting, you’ll learn about your particular gun by disassembling and learning proper cleaning techniques. This is the ultimate class to help you feel comfortable with your own firearm.  2 hours   $100

Firearms - Private Lessons
On average our instructors have over 20 years’ experience, plus intense background in Criminal Justice, and/or Security training. Private lessons are available to learn a new gun, improve your shooting, or move into a new skill level. Setup an appointment here. $100 for 1st hour.

Upon successful course completion the provided forms must be sent to the state of California with a fee of $80.00 to attain your permit.
